When things go wrong
Things do not always work out the way we or the client planned. Unfortunately this is often the fault of the client. Here are some examples of where our best efforts could not make up for the lack of understanding, or the willingness to take sound advice, from the client:
- Irrelevant domain names that do not work – We have had to deal with clients who complain that their websites do not generate the visits or business they anticipated. If you have a domain name that in no shape or form represents what your business does, then you are going to lose out. Search engines tie domain names and what they find in them, with the nature of the business. If we feel your domain name is not going to work, we will tell you, and why. At the end of the day though, it is your choice, and you have to accept the risks.
Understand this: most clients are not in the league of Amazon (Who in their right minds would connect a river with online shopping?), Nike (sports gear), or the like. If you have millions to spend promoting a brand name, it will eventually reach many people and they associate the name with the business' function. Mere mortal cannot do this and so we have to rely on logic and common sense. - A client's insistence on a certain appearance of content – We once had a client who insisted that all text had to be centre aligned and in bold. Obviously this could never work. We declined to do any further work for the client. You are not the developer and you do not have the required skills to dictate how the design should be changed, especially if it just does not make any sense and looks bad from a presentation point of view. Fancy restaurant menus can be printed with the text centre-aligned. For websites, left-alignment is the way to go.
- Your anticipated results did not materialise – Ask yourself what you did to promote your own business. Speak to others about it and advertise your website address in any place that it will be visible. Provide us with the required content to be placed on your social media pages. We cannot guess what you want to say, and we do not know what your plans are unless you share them with us. If we have sent you email or any other form of communication to request information and you do not respond, then do not tell us that the work has not been done. Generic photos placed on your site while we wait for actual ones, such as staff or employee photos, will remain generic until you supply the required photos.
- Your social connections remain inactive – We can connect you with others through targeted followers, but after that it is your responsibility to engage with them. Unanswered email or messages immediately create the impression that you are not serious about doing business. Even if we run a targeted followers campaign or manage your social media pages, you must still cooperate and react to email and messages.
- Late or non-existent payments – While we will try not to, there comes a point when we have no choice but to disable a domain if the client does not pay for services rendered. This will be a last resort. The process is quite simple really: You asked for a quotation and we provided such, you accepted it, we did the work, and you must now pay. This is the way business works. We will not hesitate to report a client to a credit bureau for non-payment. While we probably will not name and shame them on this website, we will just never recommend them to anyone else without telling them the truth, no matter how negatively it affects their business or reputation.
