  • If you have small photo and music libraries and also have enough diskspace, you can choose to sync both across all your devices. Since your iPhone or iPad is unlikely to have the same storage capacity as a Mac, the operating systems (iOS and iPadOS) are clever enough to save scaled down versions of the photos on your mobile devices, while storing the full-sized version on your Mac and iCloud. You can download the full versions at any time.
  • If you have a Mac that is running out of diskspace, you can use the Optimise Storage option to allow the operating system to decide which files you work with often and will keep them on your Mac. Ones that you have not recently used, will be removed from your Mac but kept on iCloud. The filename will still be visible on your device and when you need it, it will be downloaded from iCloud.
  • Your music library works in the same way, especially for your mobile devices, where you can select how much space to allocate for the storage of music and videos.
